Air Purifier Buying Guide: Sizing, Filters and Ongoing Costs
How to compare home air purifiers without assuming a larger-looking number or smart app makes one model right for every room.
Match clean-air delivery to room size
Check the manufacturer’s room sizing and clean-air delivery information against the room where the unit will be used. Product coverage claims may assume a specific number of air changes, so note the conditions instead of reading the largest room number in isolation.
Understand the filter job
Mechanical particle filtration, activated carbon and other filter media do different jobs. A purifier that captures particles may not remove every gas or odor. Identify the problem you are trying to address and check claims for that pollutant.
Add replacement filters to the budget
Check genuine replacement part numbers, change indicators and typical replacement guidance. The purchase price is only one part of ownership; filter access and availability matter over time.
Plan placement and noise
Leave the required intake and outlet clearance, avoid blocking air flow and consider whether the fan noise will be acceptable where you sleep or work. A lower quiet-night speed may deliver less air than the highest setting.
Avoid medical promises
An air purifier is a tool, not a guarantee of an illness-free room. Keep following medical, public-health and ventilation advice appropriate to your situation.
A final decision check
Before you buy, write down the job this product needs to perform, the minimum specifications that satisfy it, and the ongoing costs you accept. Confirm the exact model and current seller terms. If the product’s main claim cannot be supported by a credible source or does not match your own use case, do not buy it just because it is popular.
