AI Gadget Buying Checklist: Features, Privacy and Subscriptions
A practical way to evaluate products described as AI-powered: find out what runs locally, what goes to the cloud, what the subscription unlocks and how to disable the feature.
Ask what AI does
A useful product description names the task: classifying a bird photo, summarizing a recording, detecting motion or responding to a spoken instruction. Vague “AI-powered” claims are not enough to justify a purchase.
Find the processing location
Check whether processing occurs on the device, on a local hub, or in the cloud. Each path has different privacy, latency, offline and connectivity implications. Do not assume local features mean every AI feature is local.
Read subscription details
Some devices include a time-limited trial or reserve advanced alerts, history and automation behind a plan. Compare the product’s value without paid extras and check cancellation terms before activating a trial.
Check failure behavior
Find out what continues to work without internet, account login or a cloud service. Essential physical controls should not disappear behind app-only operation where that would create a problem.
Protect household data
Review camera/audio placement, account security, update policy, access sharing, storage retention and deletion controls. Use the minimum data/features needed for the task.
A final decision check
Before you buy, write down the job this product needs to perform, the minimum specifications that satisfy it, and the ongoing costs you accept. Confirm the exact model and current seller terms. If the product’s main claim cannot be supported by a credible source or does not match your own use case, do not buy it just because it is popular.
